  2. to suicide or despair, established in 1953 in
  3. the UK. Groups of lay people, often
  4. consulting with psychiatrists,
  5. psychotherapists, and doctors, offer
  6. friendship and counselling to those using
  7. their emergency telephone numbers, day or
  8. night. The Samaritans were founded at St
  9. Stephen's Church, Walbrook, London, by the
  10. rector, Chad Varah (1911-), and subsequently
  11. extended throughout Britain and overseas.
  12. They are inspired by the story of the `good
  13. Samaritan' of the New Testament, who aided
  14. the injured traveller who had been attacked
  15. and robbed, instead of `walking by on the
  16. other side of the road'.
  17.
